Don't worry so much about the colors right now. Its the style that you want to pick out first.
Click on a button that interests you and then you can change anything about it that you want:
- the colors (background, font etc)
- font style and size
- what the buttons say

Once they are generated, you simply right click on the graphic and save them to your computer for use later on. The instructions are included right on the site.
Generally I personally try to use text links whenever possible. They are a little bit more search engine friendly. Unfortunately it is a bit harder to spice up a site with simply text so there is a need for button graphics now and then.
