Giving your Google PageRank a boost is not as hard as it may seem. Doing it can help your site in several ways.
As with many things google does, they are not completely 100% clear on all of the benefits of what having a high PageRank means. Generally the higher the ranking, the more important the site is. This means there are a lot of sites linking to it, and most likely with a lot of content within.
Google has this to say about pagerank:
"...PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of our web search tools."
"Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query."
Although not specifically stated, it may be safe to conclude that a site's google pagerank also can play a role in helping get better ranking with highly competitive search words and terms.
Having a high google Pagerank makes your site much more desirable for sites to want to get a reciprical link from you. This makes it easier for you to approach a well ranked site and become linking partners with them.
In the week before the writing of this article, google had its once every month or so "deep crawl". This means the google spiders where out recalculating and reindexing sites.
The result of the latest crawl pleasantly surprised me.
The Small Business Web Site went from a 3 out of 10 ranking to a 5 out of 10 ranking. We were expecting this to bounce around a bit but it has stayed there all week on the main page of the site.
I attribute this boost in our PageRank to two separate things:
I've been able to implement a linking campaign which was spelled out very clearly in this very good ebook.
If you are interested in some very interesting and worthwhile linking strategies, be sure to check out this ebook. It is highly recommended.
Don't let all of this talk about PageRank give you a false impression.
It is not "the holy grail" of search engine recognition. In fact you would do well to focus more on adding good quality content to your site then on trying to boost your pagerank.
It is good for getting a higher ranking in the eyes of sites which may be of interest for reciprical links. It is not guarantee of higher search engine listings but I suspect it does play into the formula. If nothing else, it gives you the ammo to approach sites that you are anxious to link to you. A high PageRank may convince them that your site is "worthy" of their link.
